Earlier this year, Toyota announced that it will be absorbing the Scion brand after thirteen years. The fun and exciting brand served as a way for Toyota to evaluate a number of new products, and to attract a newer, younger customer base. Scion sold more than one million vehicles during its run, and was consistently the youngest brand in the industry, with 50 percent of customers being under the age of 35.
“This isn’t a step backward for Scion; it’s a leap forward for Toyota. Scion has allowed us to fast track ideas that would have been challenging to test through the Toyota network,” announced founding vice president of Scion and now CEO of Toyota Motor North America, Jim Lentz in a press release. “I was there when we established Scion and our goal was to make Toyota and our dealers stronger by learning how to better attract and engage young customers. I’m very proud because that’s exactly what we have accomplished."
While this might seem like the end of the road for current Scion customers, the truth is not much will change and Toyota still has their backs. With the Scion name coming to an end, Toyota will rebrand most vehicles -- including the upcoming and highly anticipated C-HR -- and take over any warranties, lease or finance agreements. The Scion tC will see a final release edition before it is retired in August. In essence, the transition should be pretty seamless for consumers and dealers alike.
