For low-income students, sometimes nothing is more important than connecting with successful people from similar backgrounds.

"It's so important for these kids to see and understand success that looks like them. 'If he made it, I can make it.' And once that possibility is opened up, you can fly," says NBC Sports editor Lamont Smith who speaks to students across the nation through DreamWakers.

The co-founders of the non-profit DreamWakers, Monica Gray and Annie Medaglia, were named Toyota Mothers of Invention in 2016 for their innovative use of Skype services to bring speakers to classrooms in need.

The Toyota Mothers of Invention program has awarded $650,000 in grants since its inception in 2012 to women who are changing the world. This week, Gray and Medaglia, and other Mothers of Invention have been attending the Women in the World summit in New York.
